The Institute is a Registered Charity which exists to promote, for the public benefit, the advancement of physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology; to advance public education in the field; and to represent the needs and interests of engineering and physical sciences in the provision or advancement of health care.
Its members are Medical Physicists, Clinical Engineers and Medical Technologists, and other science and engineering professionals, who work in hospitals, university departments and industry in a wide range of specialist areas.
The Institute provides a forum for these members to learn from each other and, together, advance knowledge in the various specialties in the field, through Basic Training for new entrants to the profession and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for those who have acquired basic professional competencies. CPD is essential to maintain professional competence and participation in the IPEM CPD Scheme is obligatory for members undertaking a Programme of Advanced Training and Responsibility (PATR), for those registered as Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers or Engineering Technicians, and for those wishing to maintain registration as Clinical Scientists.
To assist members to maintain and extend professional competence, the Institute organises a programme of scientific meetings .
